The Philadelphia Eagles have made another big splash in free agency, bringing back a familiar face and fan favorite after a one-year absence.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Eagles are bringing back defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on a three-year deal worth $33 million. He spent last season with the Detroit Lions after a one-year stop in Philly.

Gardner-Johnson confirmed that he was indeed headed back to the Eagles with this post on his X/Twitter account:

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has been one of the busiest executives in the early stages of free agency. The signing of Gardner-Johnson comes after he landed superstar running back Saquon Barkley, pass-rushing stalwart Bryce Huff and former Miami Dolphins 1,000-yard receiver DeVante Parker in free agency.

The Eagles also lost All-Pro center Jason Kelce and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox to retirement. RB D’Andre Swift (signed with the Chicago Bears) left in free agency, and All-Pro safety Kevin Byard was released in a cap-saving move.

The 26-year-old Gardner-Johnson played a significant role in the Eagles’ trip to Super Bowl 57 in the 2022 campaign. Acquired via trade with the New Orleans Saints ahead of the regular season, Gardner-Johnson tallied a league-leading six interceptions to go along with eight pass defenses and one sack.

Gardner-Johnson missed all but three games in his lone year with the Lions due to a torn Pectoral muscle he suffered back in Week 2. He had one interception and three pass defenses in those contests.
