When WNBA superstar Diana Taurasi offered words of caution to Caitlin Clark about the transition to the professional league, little did she know that the rookie sensation would defy expectations right out of the gate. As the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft, all eyes were on Clark as she made her preseason debut with the Indiana Fever.

“You look superhuman playing against some 18 years olds but you’re going to come play with some grown women that have been playing professional basketball for a long time,” Taurasi said.

Caitlin Clark’s thoughtful analysis of her WNBA debut in the Indiana-Dallas game

“I’m not saying that it’s not going to translate, when you’re great at what you do you’re just going to get better. But there is going to be a transition period when you have to give some grace as a rookie. It may take a little bit longer for some people.

“It’s kind of like when you go from kindergarten to first grade there’s a learning adjustment.

“When you go from high school to college there’s a learning adjustment. I don’t think I said anything that wasn’t factually correct. Like anything, greatness is going to translate and she’s proven that in every level and I don’t see that being any different in the WNBA.”

Clark stands out in debut

Clark she did not disappoint. Facing the Dallas Wings, she showcased her trademark dominance, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor, including an impressive 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, to tally 16 points.

For many rookies, the transition to the WNBA can be daunting, especially when facing established teams such as the Dallas Wings, who boasted a 22-18 record in the previous season. However, Clark seemed unfazed by the challenge, demonstrating her ability to thrive on the professional stage from the outset.

While Taurasi had expressed doubts about Clark‘s ability to adapt to the rigors of WNBA competition, the rookie’s stellar performance served as a resounding response.
