When the 2024/25 NCAA women’s basketball season begins this fall, Connecticut Huskies guard Paige Bueckers is poised to assume the mantle as the top player in the game.

A do-it-all floor general who can dictate games with her scoring as well as her playmaking, Bueckers will enter next season having already completed her studies at Connecticut as she seeks to lead the Huskies to their first championship since 2016.

This will give Bueckers the opportunity to focus solely on her craft in her fourth and final NCAA season, and she waved “goodbye” to school in a memorable way at her graduation ceremony.

Bueckers’ charisma on display

In an instantly-iconic moment at graduation, Bueckers hit the Griddy — a dance move that went viral on TikTok in 2019 and has become part of North American culture in the years since. Bueckers heard her name called and went to work, swaying back and forth as she received an ovation from the crowd.

Ovations have been a normal part of Bueckers’ life since she arrived in Storrs, Connecticut four years ago. Bueckers was the top high school player in her class and guided UConn to consecutive Final Fours in 2021 and 2022.

After missing the 2022/23 campaign through injury, Bueckers returned almost immediately to the top of the game and led the Huskies to another Final Four this season — only to fall to Caitlin Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the national semifinal.

Despite graduating, Bueckers has one season of NCAA eligibility remaining due to the knee injury that cost her the entire 2022/23 season.

She will be UConn’s star player again when the program resumes its chase for the national championship next year, and she is currently regarded as the favorite to go #1 overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
