‘The weight of the world off my shoulders’: Caitlin Clark reveals why she declared for WNBA

When Caitlin Clark announced she would enter her name in the WNBA draft and forego a potential fifth season at Iowa, many wondered why, and why at this time.

Clark revealed that this looming decision has been a burden to her, and now that it’s made — a weight has been lifted off her shoulders.

“I think that having this decision done is going to allow me to play my best basketball, and that’s honestly my main priority,” Clark said.

“Getting the weight of the world off my shoulders and being able to enjoy this last month with my teammates is the biggest thing, and I think I kind of knew in my heart.”

“Everybody was worried about the record and thought she’s so stressed out about the record,” Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder said. “She was never stressed out about the record, she was stressed out about making this decision.”

Clark and Iowa’s coaching staff had a conversation this week, and a decision was made.

“I think I just knew in my heart and that goes back to my recruiting process,” Clark said.

“I knew in my heart I had to be here, being here has been so special — and it’s not over — but I think I’m ready for the next chapter in my life.”

“You’re obviously disappointed because you want her to come back,” Bluder said. “She’s a tremendous player and we would’ve loved to have had her come back.

But also her four years is up — even though she could come back, she’s ready for a new challenge.”

With the future now a certainty, Clark can turn all of her attention to the next month of basketball. And the fanbase can savor every last moment she’s in black and gold.

“There’s no reason to be tense because these moments go so fast,” Clark said.

“I think that’s just the biggest thing right now is just smile, have fun — that’s really when I play my best basketball. I’m excited.”

Clark and the No. 6 Hawkeyes will take on No. 2 Ohio State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday at Noon.
