Taylor Swift has always made the headlines by dating high-profile celebrities and then writing songs about them. More often than not, her timeless songs have topped the charts (she was 2023’s most-streamed artist on Spotify) but the shelf lives of her many relationships have expired fairly quickly.
Regardless, that hasn’t stopped Swift, who’s currently dating Travis Kelce, from exploring, talking, and signing about love. Over the years, we’ve come across different interviews, reports, and her own songs which shed light on the pop star’s rules on love. In one such interview, Swift revealed the most important rule that guys need to follow to catch her attention in the right way.
Taylor Swift Reveals Her Most Important Dating Rule
Taylor Swift rose to prominence as a teen musical sensation in the mid-2000s. After the success of Tim McGraw, the singer-songwriter never looked back and remained in the spotlight by delivering hits at a never-before-seen pace and efficiency.

In the last two decades, many Hollywood stars have proven to be her muse and inspiration behind the many hit break-up songs. While the 34-year-old rarely talks about meanings and individuals included in her lyrics, she does freely talk about her rules to give insight into how she approaches her relationships.
When asked in an interview (via youRpower – YouTube) about the number one rule a guy has to follow if she goes out with him, Swift replied:
“Oh, there’s a lot of rules. I’m working on a new one that they have to be a good guy.”
As such, it’s fair to assume Travis Kelce is a very good guy (at least for Swift) because their relationship is seemingly going really strong and they haven’t been able to remain away from each other ever since the 12-time Grammy winner attended an NFL game in September of 2023.
What Dating Rules Taylor Swift Came Up With After Her Breakup With Joe Jonas
Long before Swift gained interest in the NFL (and of course Kelce) she dated fellow musician, Joe Jonas. More than their 2008 romance, the couple’s breakup attracted the limelight after Swift revealed that Jonas broke up with her over the phone in 25 seconds. She then talked about him in her song, Forever and Always.

After her breakup, she also devised plenty of dating rules to avoid such a disappointing relationship. Speaking to The Boot.com (via MTV), the Blank Space singer revealed:
“I have this rule: I don’t call a guy first. And you can’t ever send two text messages in a row.”
After this, Swift’s name was romantically attached to the likes of Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, and Jake Gyllenhaal, among others. Much to Swifties’ disappointment, no such link materialized into something special – if subsequent reports and lyrics of Swift’s songs are to be believed.
