The San Francisco Giants ran smack dab into the middle of one of the hottest teams in baseball, and so far it’s been a disaster. Not only has it been a disaster, but it’s been fairly boring. But that’s about to change. The boring part, at least. I make no guarantees about the disaster.

Ahead of Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, the Giants made a series of moves. Right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies was called up, and catcher Jakson Reetz had his contract purchased from AAA Sacramento. In corresponding moves, catcher Tom Murphy was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left knee sprain, and right-handed pitcher Mitch White was designated for assignment.

But the big move is coming today. While the Giants have not yet made the move official, they did announce it on Sunday: right-handed pitcher Mason Black will be added to the roster and start on Monday, making his MLB debut.

The team’s third-round pick in 2021, Black ended last year in AAA, knocking on the door. He impressed the coaching staff during the spring, and was in in line to begin the year in the rotation, keeping Alex Cobb’s spot warm … until the Giants signed Blake Snell.

Black instead went to Sacramento, where he’s been lights out: in six starts, Black has a 1.01 ERA, a 3.29 FIP, and 29 strikeouts to eight walks in 26.2 innings. The Giants held off on adding him to the roster to preserve 40-man spots, but with Jefferies struggling in place of Snell, and the team in something of a free fall, the team is turning to an exciting option.

No word yet on what the corresponding moves will be, as the Giants will need to clear a spot on both the 40-man roster and the active roster. Optioning Randy Rodríguez, who made his MLB debut on Saturday, seems the most likely active roster move. If I had to guess a 40-man move, it would be shifting Wade Meckler to the 60-day IL.

But that’s neither here nor there. Right now we just celebrate an exciting MLB debut.
