Caitlin Clark Reveals Championship Goal for WNBA’s Indiana Fever, But Rookie Priorities in Orde

Caitlin Clark just got here, and even so, it is a challenge to tap the brakes on expectations.

Her talent – and the hype – make it so.

But Clark, the No. 1 pick in this year’s WNBA Draft and the new centerpiece of the Indiana Fever, is trying to maintain perspective.

She wants to win a championship. But first …

“That is certainly where our organization wants to get back to,” she said this week at Media Day. “But I think our goal this year is to get back to the playoffs … building blocks, slowly, one step at a times in one basket.”

That’s smart talk from the rookie from Iowa, who is surely aware that the Fever last year won but 13 games and hasn’t been to the playoffs since the 2016 season.

Still, she added, “I think our team, and all the talent on our team, can really feel the potential that this group really has, and the coaching staff can really feel it.”

Meanwhile, Clark seems to be up for the pressures that are on the horizon.

“I think no matter what happens there’s going to be expectations and pressure on my shoulders and pressure on this team to be really good. That’s how you want it,” said Clark, who will make her much-anticipated debut on May 14 against the Connecticut Sun. “We wouldn’t want anything else. We want people showing up to our games, people expecting us to win a lot of basketball games this year and I’m expecting myself to play really well. I don’t think it’s anything that’s ever been different for me.”
