With Super Bowl 58 on the line, Chris Jones pleaded for Patrick Mahomes to use his legs in overtime, calling for “Pat Vick” to win them the game.

Super Bowl 58 came and went with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22. The win gave Patrick Mahomes the third Super Bowl MVP of his career and gave the Chiefs the claim to winning back-to-back Super Bowls.

The game ended up with the Chiefs scoring a walk-off touchdown in overtime, but they wouldn’t have done it without Mahomes’ legs, and his teammates knew it.

Chris Jones Predicted “Pat Vick” Would Win Kansas City Chiefs the Super Bowl

In the game, Mahomes completed 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards and threw for two touchdowns and one interception. He also had nine carries for a team-leading 66 yards, as running back Isiah Pacheco only had 59 yards on 18 attempts.

A big chunk of Mahomes’ rushing yards came in overtime, however, as he had two rushes for 27 yards on the final drive, with both gains coming in key moments. “Hey, we need Pat Vick,” Chris Jones said ahead of the final drive.

The first of the two carries came on 4th-and-1 at the Kansas City 34-yard line when Mahomes ran to the right for eight yards and a first down. The next one came on 3rd-and-1 at San Francisco’s 32-yard line when he scrambled up the middle for 19 yards, putting the Chiefs in prime scoring position.

“If it’s not there, I’ll run for it,” Mahomes said.

Although it isn’t a main part of his game, Mahomes is known for his ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs when it matters the most. In his career, he has 374 attempts for 1,936 yards and 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he has 524 yards and five touchdowns in the postseason.

Ahead of the 2017 NFL Draft, when he was taken by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick, Mahomes ran a 4.80-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine that included 1.65-second and 2.80-second 10- and 20-yard splits, respectively. He also had a 6.88-second three-cone drill and a 4.08-second 20-yard shuttle.

“You f***ing dog; you f***ing dog,” tight end Travis Kelce said after Mahomes’ runs. Mahomes has had over 100 yards rushing in a postseason three times in his career (2019, 2021, and 2023). His 141 yards in 2023 was the most, but his two touchdowns in 2019 were the most for that. “We’ll finish it,” Mahomes said.

Following 2023, Mahomes has been a starter for six seasons and 96 games. He’s compiled 28,424 yards, 219 touchdowns, and 63 interceptions. He also has a 74-22 record and is a two-time AP NFL MVP, two-time first-team All-Pro, one-time AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year, one-time second-team All-Pro, and six-time Pro Bowler.
