In the year 1995, a five-year-old Travis Kelce forged an enduring friendship with Aric Jones at the Cleveland Heights Recreation Center. Now, decades later, Jones, aged 32, reflects on how he’s living a cherished dream alongside the NFL sensation and their tight-knit clique of friends from Cleveland Heights.
Recalling their formative years, Jones fondly reminisces about their shared experiences on the Mighty Mites Hockey team. “I was four, Trav was five, and he towered as the biggest and most skilled player on the team, while I stood as the smallest and the most jovial,” Jones recollects.
Although Kelce and Jones didn’t share the same school until high school, their paths frequently intersected, including through familial connections. “Travis frequented middle school and played rec league basketball with my older brother,” Jones elaborates. “During my brother’s stint in the 5th grade travel league basketball, Travis, then a 4th grader, played alongside him.”
Their bond extended beyond the confines of sports fields, with both attending the John Carroll Sports Camps. “The camp counselors held Jason in awe,” Jones chuckles, referencing Kelce’s brother. “My brother and Travis were consistently vying to be recognized as the top two players.”
Jones vividly recollects Kelce’s burgeoning prominence even before high school. “I’ll never forget it. Travis was in 8th grade, I was in 7th, and his school was slated to face off against mine,” Jones recounts. “The entire school day buzzed with excitement, whispers of ‘Travis is coming up here to play today.’ And as Travis emerged from the visitor locker room, a throng of kids from my middle school awaited him, chanting his name all the way to the field.”
Kelce’s imposing stature amidst his peers was unmistakable. “He was a giant among mere mortals,” Jones reflects. “And his trademark stride down the corridor, with kids from the opposing school trailing behind, left an indelible impression. It was unlike anything I’d seen before.”
Their journey from childhood comrades to mutually supportive allies exemplifies the enduring strength of their bond, forged in the crucible of Cleveland Heights. As Kelce continues to dazzle in the NFL arena, he carries with him the steadfast support of his lifelong friend, Aric Jones, and a treasure trove of shared memories from their upbringing together.
