Kansas City’s star TE isn’t convinced that his brother is ready to retire
Despite swirling speculation, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce isn’t convinced that his brother, Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, is ready to call it a career.
While speaking with media members in Las Vegas ahead of Super Bowl 58, Travis was asked about his brother’s future in the league. His response should give hope to Birds fans.
“I’ll tell you what, I think it’s still up in the air whether or not he’s going to continue to play football, Travis said of Jason.
The star tight end didn’t stop there either. Earlier this week, the NFL announced that the Eagles will be kicking off the 2024 season by playing in the first-ever game in Brazil on Friday, Sept. 6. When asked if he thought his brother would be playing in that game, Travis was optimistic.
“I think so,” Travis said. “I don’t know. I’m not a betting man, but I think he’s got some football left in him.”
While Travis wouldn’t put any percentages on his brother’s chances of returning, it certainly sounds like he thinks that Jason still has more to give to the game. The eye test says the same.
Despite his advanced age — he turns 37 in November — Jason is still arguably the best center in the entire NFL. He was named First-Team All-Pro for the sixth time in his career this season. He was also named to the Pro Bowl for the seventh time in his career. If he does decide to retire, it certainly wouldn’t be because he couldn’t play at a high level anymore.
The Jason Kelce announcement watch continues in Philadelphia.
After the Eagles were bested by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 32-9 during the Wild Card Round in January, Jason reportedly informed his teammates that he intended to call it a career, but he made it clear that he wasn’t ready to decide his future shortly thereafter. A final decision is expected to be made after he has had time to think things over.
“When it’s time to officially announce what’s happening in the future, it’ll be done in a way that’s definitive and pays respect to a lot of people and individuals that have meant a lot to me and has led to the career I’ve had,” Kelce said at the time.
Eagles fans have been waiting with bated breath since then. We are all far from any definitives, but Travis’ comments make it seem like we might not have seen the last of Jason Kelce on the football field.
