The former Cowboys quarterback says Mahomes still has a chance to surpass Brady.
Troy Aikman is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and as an analyst, he is one of the most respected voices in the media. Therefore, when the former Dallas Cowboys player says that Tom Brady is still better than Patrick Mahomes, it’s worthwhile to consider his reasoning.

The debate over who is the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) has been raging for decades. From Terry Bradshaw to Brady himself, everyone has their candidate. In recent years, Mahomes’ name has been mentioned more and more frequently and many are already putting him above Brady.
There is certainly a case to be made for the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback; in his seven-year career he has not missed a single postseason, he has led his team to the AFC Championship three times, and he has played in three Super Bowls, winning two of them.
However, the legacy of the former New England Patriot still seems far out of reach for almost anyone with 13 NFL Championship games, 10 Super Bowls played and seven won, and Aikman made it very clear in conversation on The Dan Patrick Show.
Troy Aikman’s opinion
Entering the debate, the former Cowboy said, “For me, it’s championships. I mean, it sounds self serving when I say that because I was able to win three. But at the end of the day, the reason that he’s getting paid $50 million a year is to win championships.”
He emphasized that bringing titles to the team’s showcase is the job of every quarterback. “It’s why all quarterbacks are. It’s why they’re drafted where they were drafted,” he asserted.
As for the debate itself, Aikman noted, “I don’t like the conversation to say, well, Patrick Mahomes is the greatest quarterback of all time.” Although he clarified that Mahomes is still very young, saying, “I mean, I just do n’t know how you can say that at this stage of his career. He’s certainly on pace.”
What Mahomes needs
The now ESPN analyst was very clear when he said, “With Tom, I think you’ve got to win seven or you’ve got to win eight. I do think that’s the measuring stick. And it’s hard to imagine that.”
However, he asserted that nothing is impossible “There was a time when I didn’t think anybody could beat Joe Montana or Terry Bradshaw and win five and then he’s [Tom Brady] gone on, won seven. So I guess that’s the bar. “
As Aikman himself said, Mahomes is still young and has certainly taken a good step toward matching or surpassing any of the NFL’s greats, including Tom Brady. In the upcoming Super Bowl LVIII, the Chiefs’ star will have another opportunity to strengthen his case as the GOAT.
