Brittney Griner has become notorious for posting images on social media that often walk the tightrope of public acceptance and her latest snap is no different.

The WNBA star took to Instagram to share a photo of herself posing topless alongside her clothed wife, Cherelle, who is currently pregnant with their first child.

Griner, 33, showcased her tattoos on her back as she turned sidewards to the camera, with her hand placed on her other half’s growing belly.

Cherelle was wearing a tan-colored bra and a light satin gown in the photoshoot, and she could be seen grinning from ear to ear as Griner looked at her with a look of adoration.

The couple, who tied the knot in 2019, announced they were expecting in April this year.

While fans poured into the comments section to offer their well wishes to the pair, not everyone was on board with how the six-time WNBA All-Star chose to present herself.

Pointed at the Phoenix Mercury center, one online user wrote: “sis loves taking her shirt off for no reason”.

It is a direct reference to a video where Griner was seen hooping basketballs in a pool with her friends while topless, and WNBA fans were divided over the incident.

But it seems the loved-up couple are too occupied with preparing for the birth of their baby to be bothered with such comments. As reported by CBS News, Brittney and Cherelle have decided to name their baby boy Bash.

Brittney Griner’s complicated past

It represents a whirlwind couple of years for Griner, who was behind bars in Russia as recently as 2022.

The 6ft 3in star made headlines when she was arrested in Russia after a search at Moscow Airport revealed she had been carrying vape cartridges in her luggage.

Griner, who was playing basketball in Russia during the WNBA off-season, pled guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison. She was detained for 10 months, but was released in December 2022, after U.S government officials negotiated a prisoner swap with Russia.

Upon her return to the U.S., Griner re-signed with the Mercury, who she joined as a No.1 overall draft pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, and she has released a memoir about her time in Russian prison titled ‘Coming Home’.
