Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to add to his legend status. Mahomes and the Chiefs just won their third Super Bowl in four tries since 2019, edging on dynasty status.

On a recent episode of FS1’s First Things First , the question was asked if Mahomes is more comparable to NFL legend Tom Brady or NBA legend Michael Jordan.

Host Nick Wright said there is “no comp” for the Chiefs quarterback.

“Mahomes is going to be the standard to which guys are held. He is not held to anyone’s standards,” Wright declared. “He is Babe Ruth. He is Wayne Gretzky. He is Tiger Woods. He is the guy that people are now going to compare others to.”

Mahomes has taken Kansas City to the AFC Championship game in all six seasons that he’s started. But Wright claims, all the other “greats” had “yeah, but” setbacks early on in their careers.

For example, Brady missed the playoffs completely in his third season in New England.

“Even if people don’t end up calling [Mahomes] the GOAT, whenever the next great quarterback comes around, they are not going to compare his start to Brady,” Wright said. “They’re going to compare him to Patrick.”

Chiefs parade gunman explains shocking reason for shooting

Last Wednesday, what was supposed to be a celebratory day for the Kansas City Chiefs and their fans turned tragic when a shooting took place at the Kansas City Super Bowl parade, killing one person and injuring over twenty others. The shooting took place toward the end of the festivities, with multiple Chiefs players still on the stage that had been set up, and sent a shockwave through both the sports world and the country as a whole. Now, more information is being unearthed as to what led to the shooting, which is said to have stemmed from a dispute among some members of the crowd. “…A KCPD detective wrote that [Lyndell] Mays was interviewed at a local hospital after suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Initially, the docs state Mays told police he didn’t shoot at anyone following a dispute with a group of individuals at the parade — although when ‘Mays was confronted that we had surveillance video of the incident, he then changed his story,’” reported TMZ. “…Mays, according to cops, said a group he was quarreling with had told him, “I’m going to get you” … something that Mays apparently believed meant, ‘I’m going to kill you,’” reported the outlet. Mays of course is now in custody along with others involved in the incident, and hospitals have now discharged all twelve children that were injured in the shooting, per PEOPLE (Via Entertainment Tonight). Expect more information to come out as to what led to the violent incident in the coming days and weeks as the community continues to mourn.

‘Perfect Fit’ Willing to Waive No-Trade at Deadline to Join Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are riding high on the success of their top six, featuring the often-unstoppable blend of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. With Corey Perry and Evander Kane in the mix, they boast a formidable offensive arsenal. But, there’s one thing missing — a legitimate scoring threat on the wing of their second line. To bolster their middle six, especially alongside Draisaitl and Kane, the Oilers are exploring potential trade options. Jake Guentzel may be the dream fit, but uncertainties surrounding his availability, acquisition cost, and injury situation make him a bit of a question mark. Two new names have popped up, with Harman Dayal and Max Bultman of The Athletic calling one former Stanley Cup champion a “perfect fit.” That winger is Vladimir Tarasenko and he’s reportedly available out of Ottawa. Why Is Tarasenko the Right Fit for the Oilers? The Oilers are considering other options to avoid potential mistakes at this season’s deadline. Unwilling to part with Philip Broberg for a rental, and hoping to keep their first-rounder, there are two schools of thought when it comes to Tarasenko. First, he might be available without having to move Broberg. Second, he’s willing to talk extension with teams, including Ottawa. Tarasenko is actively looking for an extension and has switched agents multiple times in the hope that he can land something more secure. All of this is outside of the fact he’s a solid player. Though not the same dominant force the used to be, the 32-year-old sniper boasts 14 goals and 36 points in 49 games, with 29 points at even strength. As the article points out: Tarasenko’s 2.3 points-per-hour rate at five-on-five would rank fifth among Oilers forwards who’ve played at least 250 minutes this year. He scores everywhere he goes and on a team that boasts the firepower the Oilers do, it’s not a stretch for Edmonton to believe they can rely on his production. Tarasenko Is a Good Player Who Happens to Like the Oilers The article also notes that Tarasenko’s midseason stint with the New York Rangers last year illustrated his ability to join a team midseason and produce. While his run with the Rangers wasn’t a long one, he proved he has a strong work ethic and physical presence. When he wants to be somewhere, he’s an even better offensive threat. Pierre LeBrun suggests that Tarasenko would likely waive his no-trade clause for Edmonton, making him an intriguing option. And, because he’s got the leverage to control his fate, it might be more challenging for the Senators to get a top-notch return unless Tarasenko gives his blessing. This could mean Ottawa taking less than the going market rate for wingers of his ability or having to retain salary in the trade, something the Oilers might require. The scribes proposed a trade that involves sending Tarasenko (with 75% salary retained) to Edmonton in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick, a 2024 sixth-round pick, and an additional 2025 fourth-round pick to a third-party broker to facilitate the extra retention. If accurate, this is a price the Oilers should be willing to pay. The deal addresses Edmonton’s salary cap constraints, allowing them to fit Tarasenko’s $5 million cap hit under their budget and it gives the Senators a decent return, moving a player who is likely to depart in the summer anyway. Frankly, that does sound almost perfect.

Doc Rivers has big admission about Bucks firing Adrian Griffin

The Milwaukee Bucks fired first-year head coach Adrian Griffin on Jan. 23. He had led the team for 43 games, winning 30 of them. Milwaukee was second in the Eastern Conference. Shortly after parting ways with Griffin, the Bucks pivoted toward Doc Rivers, who was a free agent following his firing from the Philadelphia 76ers at the end of last season. Milwaukee’s decision to part with Griffin raised a lot of eyebrows. According to Rivers, who was speaking on a recent episode of Sirius XM NBA Radio, he was among those confused by Milwaukee’s decision. “I’ll be honest,” Rivers said. “I told our owners when they called, ‘I’ll be honest, I don’t understand why you’re doing this.’ One of the things they said is, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter. We’ve done it now, and we want you.’ So, that was a tough one. That’s where you have the hesitation.” Rivers has lost seven of his first 10 games as Milwaukee’s head coach. The team’s defensive issues have continued to stand out despite the change in leadership on the sidelines. Rivers recently noted how the job is more difficult than he expected. The Bucks are under pressure to improve. The addition of Damian Lillard last summer was supposed to elevate them into potential championship contenders. Given their current defensive issues, they look like a second-round exit at best. That’s why the Bucks wanted Rivers. He’s coached more than 1,800 regular-season games. He has a 51.6% win rate in the playoffs. And he’s won a championship before, but that was back in 2008 with the Boston Celtics. Nevertheless, Rivers’ comments regarding his new role with Milwaukee are certainly creating a stir. His blunt honesty indicates a bigger task than many envision when looking from the outside. It’s likely the Bucks will need to make additional moves in the offseason. After all, Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez are no longer the prime talents they once were. Yet, when you have Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, excuses don’t fly. Rivers has to make Milwaukee competitive and fast. Otherwise, the front office will have some difficult questions to answer in the summer. And Lillard’s frustration at not being on a contending team will soon start to re-surface. Things are looking rather precarious for Milwaukee right now. Rivers is right. It’s going to be a tough job.

The Raiders are one of the few QB-needy teams that don’t possess a top-three pick and don’t have exclusive negotiating rights with a starting-caliber option. As a result, they’ve been mentioned as a natural suitor for Bears QB Justin Fields. However, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur dismisses that notion, stating that it’s “very unlikely” the Raiders pursue Fields. Tafur’s logic mostly surrounds the presence of new Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, who guided the Bears offense for the past two years. Following disappointing results between 2022 and 2023, Getsy was let go by Chicago, but that didn’t stop Antonio Pierce from bringing him on the Raiders staff. As Tafur notes, the Raiders hired Getsy because of his previous pass-game work in Green Bay and his creative “run-game concepts” in Chicago, with Pierce and the organization chalking up the Bears’ offensive struggles to the player under center. The team has apparently already made up its mind about who was to blame in Chicago, and it doesn’t sound like they have any interest in replicating that arrangement in Las Vegas. Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t expected to be back with the Raiders next season, and despite Aidan O’Connell’s solid showing as a starter, the 2023 fourth-round pick won’t just be handed the reins in 2024. While a few signs point to the Raiders pursuing a veteran QB via free agency, it sounds like the organization will be more aggressive in moving up in the draft. We heard recently that the Raiders were eyeing a move for the first overall pick, but the Bears are expected to require a historic haul for the selection. Pierce’s connections to Jayden Daniels, who was at Arizona State during the new Raiders HC’s time with the Sun Devils, have also emerged. With Caleb Williams likely going No. 1, the Raiders wouldn’t have to deal with Chicago’s trade demands in that scenario. Still, if the Raiders are truly interest in the LSU product, they’d have to find a way to move up from their current No. 13 draft position.

The Pittsburgh Steelers got out of their comfort zone when they decided to hire Arthur Smith to be their next offensive coordinator. Part of hiring an outside candidate that didn’t come up in the organization means you give him the authority to pick and choose his coaching staff. Well, after bringing in his own QB and WR coach, Smith added another assistant on Wednesday, while reshuffling the title of former Steelers QB Coach and interim OC Mike Sullivan. Steelers Hire Matt Baker, Re-title Mike Sullivan Pittsburgh’s newest offensive assistant, Matt Baker, goes way back with Arthur Smith seeing as the two were college teammates at North Carolina before coaching together last season in Atlanta. Baker also has a relationship with recently signed QB Coach Tom Arth, as both spent time at John Carroll. But with the signing of Arth came a change of title for Mike Sullivan via the team’s website. So we’ll see how things come together for Pittsburgh’s offense in 2024, but one thing is for sure, the staff and scheme will look different, and it’s been created in Arthur Smith’s image.

In an article from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, he indicates that the San Jose Sharks holding the status of a deadline seller could be a bit of an understatement. Pagnotta reports that San Jose general manager Mike Grier has the phone lines open and is well-positioned to complete a full-on fire sale by March 8. Although some teams have reportedly been calling the Sharks in regard to Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl, their contracts and injury status this season make a trade all the more unlikely. A bulk of San Jose’s movement should primarily come out of their second- and third-tier groups, such as Mario Ferraro, Anthony Duclair, Mikael Granlund, Mike Hoffman, Alexander Barabanov, Luke Kunin, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Kaapo Kahkonen, Kevin Labanc and Jan Rutta. Outside of a few, most of these players may not command a large return individually but could net the Sharks a nice return in the bigger picture. With the bonus of being able to retain the salary of at least one outgoing player, San Jose’s cupboard for prospects and draft picks could very well expand considerably in the next 20 days. As far as what the Sharks may be looking for in a return, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now wrote that the head coach of the team, David Quinn, is looking to add more size to the lineup. Depending on how aggressive the organization wants to be in realizing this desire from Quinn, there should be options available to them at the deadline. Although an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, San Jose could look to poach defenseman Tyler Myers away from the Vancouver Canucks, who is tied for the tallest defenseman in the NHL this season. Unfortunately, Myers is the owner of a modified no-trade clause, and he may be unwilling to drop 30 spots in the standings for a change of scenery. The available options certainly shrink on the offensive front, but there is one option that could entice the Sharks at this year’s deadline. Recently positioning themselves as a deadline buyer, the Detroit Red Wings could be willing to part with prospect Elmer Soderblom for the right return. Standing at the same height as Myers, the 22-year-old prospect has scored six goals and 19 points in 41 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season.
