His future remains uncertain

Denver Broncos‘ acquisition of Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks was initially hailed as a coup, positioning him as their franchise quarterback. However, the union soured quickly, leading to speculation about a divorce after just two seasons.

Wilson, seeking a starting role, is reportedly willing to accept a substantial pay cut for the upcoming 2024 NFL season. With the Broncos expected to release him before his $37 million salary for 2025 becomes fully guaranteed, Wilson may settle for the league minimum elsewhere, leaving Denver to cover the remaining balance of his $39 million compensation package for 2024.

During the 2023 season’s latter part, the Broncos benched Wilson after allegedly issuing him an ultimatum. Following a victory over the Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, Wilson claimed the team demanded he alter his contract or face benching.

Specifically, the Broncos sought adjustments to his $37 million injury guarantee, prompting Wilson to opt for benching.

“They definitely told me I was going to be benched and all that,” Wilson told ESPN.

“That whole bye week, I didn’t know what was going to be the case. I wasn’t going to remove the injury guarantee.”

One of the best quarterbacks available

Despite a lackluster 2022 season, Wilson‘s potential availability at a reduced cap hit of just over a million dollars makes him an enticing option for quarterback-needy teams.

While he will turn 36 in November, his track record suggests he could still provide value to teams lacking solid quarterback options.

As the NFL offseason unfolds, Wilson’s situation will be closely monitored, with many viewing him as one of the top quarterback options available, particularly given his reported willingness to accept a significant pay cut in exchange for a starting role.
