The Kansas City Chiefs are the latest NFL superpower that’s taken hold of the league. With the way Patrick Mahomes has been playing, it’s understandable to think that the rest of the teams in the NFL are just terrible.

However, avid fans know that there are plenty of talented QBs in the league. Four of them are competing against Mahomes to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. However, there’s something that’s preventing them from reaching the Super Bowl.

With the way the Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have been playing, is it fair to assume that these QBs won’t likely win a Super Bowl unless they do something drastically different?

AFC QBs might find it impossible to stop the Kansas City Chiefs

The Ringer’s Danny Heifetz wrote about the current status of the 32 NFL teams and their respective QB situations. He grouped three AFC franchises in a controversial category: they found their guy, but it’s possible that they won’t win the Super Bowl as long as Mahomes is playing for the Chiefs.

He explained his point in terms that will hurt the hearts of Bills, Chargers, and Ravens fans everywhere:
Mahomes has ended three of Buffalo’s past four playoff runs. He just went into Baltimore and ended the season for the best Ravens team of Jackson’s career. Herbert’s lone playoff appearance was an epic Chargers collapse versus Jacksonville, Mahomes is 8-2 vs. the Chargers since he entered the league, and the Chiefs are on an eight-year winning streak in the AFC West.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Patrick Mahomes is the sole reason the Kansas City Chiefs are enjoying the level of success they are experiencing. Against all odds, he led the team to the Super Bowl with an impressive tally of 4183 passing yards and 27 passing TDs on a 67% completion rate and a 92.6 QB rating.

Make no mistake: Justin Herbert, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson are terrific QBs. If the Kansas City Chiefs were out of the picture, at least one of them would have lifted the Lombardi trophy already.

The fact that these players stay ringless only adds to the already impressive legend of Patrick Mahomes.

Steelers Hire Matt Baker, Re-title Mike Sullivan Pittsburgh’s newest offensive assistant, Matt Baker, goes way back with Arthur Smith seeing as the two were college teammates at North Carolina before coaching together last season in Atlanta. Baker also has a relationship with recently signed QB Coach Tom Arth, as both spent time at John Carroll. But with the signing of Arth came a change of title for Mike Sullivan via the team’s website. So we’ll see how things come together for Pittsburgh’s offense in 2024, but one thing is for sure, the staff and scheme will look different, and it’s been created in Arthur Smith’s image.

The Grizzlies will continue to be without guards Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart for several more weeks, the team announced in a press release. Bane is progressing well from a Grade 3 left ankle sprain he suffered on Jan. 12 game against the Clippers. He is expected to return to play during the next three to five weeks. Bane was producing a career year prior to the injury, averaging 24.4 points, 5.3 assists and 4.6 rebounds in 37 games. Smart, who suffered a left finger/hand injury during a Jan. 9 game against the Mavericks, will continue to wear a splint for another three weeks. At that time, he will be re-evaluated. Acquired from the Celtics during the offseason, Smart is averaging 14.5 points and 4.3 assists in 20 starts with Memphis. The injury-ravaged Grizzlies return Friday from the All-Star break with a 20-36 mark, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Smart is eventually shut down.

Oilers Eyeing 5 Wingers for Draisaitl Ahead of the Trade Deadline

In their pursuit of strengthening the top six forward positions, the Edmonton Oilers are actively exploring potential trade options, with a particular focus on adding depth and skill to complement stars like Leon Draisaitl. The current roster boasts players like Warren Foegele, Ryan McLeod, and newcomer Corey Perry, who can fill the sixth top-six forward role. Still, the team remains open to acquiring a discernable upgrade for increased lineup depth. There are a few viable options available ahead of the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. In a recent article for The Athletic, Daniel-Nugent Bowman took a look at five names that seem to be most heavily linked to the Oilers’ search. The Top Two Winger Targets for the Oilers One prominent name in the trade discussions is Jordan Eberle, who played a crucial role for the Oilers during their postseason run in 2017. While Nugent-Bowman doesn’t speculate on the assets going the other way, other reports suggest the Oilers might try to get the Seattle Kraken to retain 75% of his salary. The Oilers have also expressed previous interest in Patrick Kane, whose consistent production for the Detroit Red Wings makes him a suitable top-six candidate. However, Kane’s control over his destination and the Red Wings’ playoff contention could complicate any potential deal. David Perron, a former Oiler, and 2019 Stanley Cup champion, is another experienced option. His lower production this season mixed with his cap hit does raise concerns. Finally, Vladimir Tarasenko, with a solid offensive rate, is actively seeking an extension and may be open to waiving his no-trade clause for Edmonton, providing an intriguing option for the Oilers to consider. Steelers’ Legend Doesn’t Hold Back On Kenny Pickett

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has not exactly inspired much confidence over his first couple of NFL seasons, but a Steelers legend believes in him going forward. Terry Bradshaw, who led Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl championships in the 1970s, is firmly backing Pickett as the team’s franchise signal-caller. “I love Pickett,” Bradshaw said on The Rich Eisen Show. “I know him well. He’s fiercely competitive. He’s a tough-minded kind. Things don’t bother him. I really like him a lot.” Bradshaw seems to be one of the few that does. Pickett made 12 starts this past season, throwing for 2,070 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 62 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 81.4. He suffered an ankle injury during the second half of the year and was slated to return later in the season, but he ended up being benched in favor of Mason Rudolph. Still, Bradshaw thinks Pickett is the guy. “Kenny’s got the poise,” Bradshaw said. “I just want my quarterback to be poised. If he’s poised, then his brain’s gonna be calm, he’s going to see the coverages, he’s going to be quick with his decision making. And Pickett has all of that.” Pickett, who played his collegiate football at the University of Pittsburgh, was selected by the Steelers with the 20th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old played in 13 games and made 12 starts during his rookie campaign, totaling 2,404 yards, seven touchdowns and nine picks while completing 63 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 76.7. Clearly, Pickett has struggled over his first two years in the league, which has some wondering if Pittsburgh will make a change under center this offseason. But apparently, Bradshaw thinks the Steelers would stick with Kenny Pickett in 2024.

Astros’ Justin Verlander responds to ‘diva’ label from Mets tenure

Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander has once again addressed a story from last summer that included somebody from within the New York Mets saying that Verlander was a “diva” during his brief stint with the National League organization. “Everyone I spoke to said, ‘JV that’s not the case,'” Verlander said during a chat with MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post about responses the right-hander received from former Mets teammates after the original story was published. Verlander signed a two-year, $86.66M contract that included a vesting third-year option to join the Mets in December 2022. The 2023 Mets were then a mess seemingly both on and off the field, and part of the “diva” story also suggested that “there was occasional discord” between Verlander and co-ace Max Scherzer before both were traded as part of New York’s summer fire sale. Verlander took to X, formerly known as Twitter, in August to say he had “nothing but respect for the Mets organization” and that he felt “sorry to hear that a staff member took offense to constructive criticism on how we could improve.” While Scherzer insisted that same month that the 2023 Mets “actually had a great clubhouse,” it’s widely believed that wasn’t the case and that the team’s problems may have existed for several years. “We both understood the mission had kind of failed,” Verlander said about how he and Scherzer accepted exits out of New York ahead of last summer’s trade deadline. Outsiders may never fully know why the most expensive squad in all of MLB for 2023 flopped so badly across a handful of months before Mets owner Steve Cohen decided to go in a different direction. One thing that’s clear is that Verlander took the “diva” jab personally. “I wasn’t always the best teammate,” Verlander told Heyman about his younger days in the league. “I was like a horse with blinders on running a race. I’m in it. This is what it takes to be as great as I can be. Don’t get in my way. That didn’t provide a lot of bull—- time. If you weren’t on that wavelength, we didn’t connect.” What’s done is done, and the future Hall of Famer acknowledged he is “super happy” to be back with Houston after he was first associated with that club from a portion of the 2017 season through 2022.
