Caleb Williams confidently responds to Patrick Mahomes comparisons and identifies one key area where he matches up to Chiefs QB

Caleb Williams has heard the Patrick Mahomes comparisons and has finally had his say on them.

Former USC quarterback Williams is widely tipped to be the No.1 overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft and has been continuously compared to the Chiefs signal caller throughout his college career.

Williams threw at USC’s Pro Day in Los Angeles on Wednesday where he spoke to Colin Cowherd about the Mahomes comparisons.

The 22-year-old said he respects the Kansas City star but there’s nothing Mahomes does physically that Williams himself thinks he can’t do.

“Everybody gets crazy when I say that…” he said.

“There’s things that he does, physically — obviously, I’m not Patrick Mahomes and I’m not in his brain — but things that he does physically that I don’t think that I can’t do.

“So, I just call it respect, and hopefully soon I’ll be able to see him and have a good battle.

Williams and Mahomes undoubtedly have a similar style of play and are able to throw on the run and make off schedule throws.

The former Trojan has been compared to the reigning Super Bowl MVP for his ability to improvise on the fly and make plays with both his arm and his legs.

While many have praised that ability, some have questioned how well Williams will be able to transition into the structure of an NFL offense.

The youngster is certainly able to make big plays, but told Cowherd he prefers doing it through the air rather than on the ground.

“I don’t like running unless I have to,” Williams said.

Rory McIlroy leaves room in stitches with response to Caleb Williams question
“I like throwing the ball to my receivers, letting all of us have fun. It’s a lot more fun to be able to throw a 20-yard dagger route to my ‘X’ receiver and let them eat up down the middle.”

The former USC star is seen as a generational talent and had every NFL team in attendance to watch him at his pro day this week.

He showed off his skillset on numerous pass attempts, operating from the pocket as he threw various short and deep balls.

The highlight was a big time throw to USC teammate Brenden Rice.

The Chicago Bears have the No.1 pick in the upcoming draft and are widely expected to draft Williams, especially after sending previous starting QB Justin Fields to the Steelers.

The Bears sent a ton of representatives to watch Williams in the flesh on Wednesday, including wide receiver Keenan Allen who just joined the franchise from the Chargers.

At one point, Williams went over to Allen and hugged him, giving fans a glimpse at what’s likely to be a formidable partnership for the Bears next season.

“So, I’ve known Keenan for probably a year now, hung out with him a few times,” Williams said afterwards.

“So, to have him here and for me to possibly be going to the same team as him now, knowing him for a year, it’s exciting.

“He’s coming off one of his best years. That’s really exciting.

“So, to possibly be able to have him as a wide receiver and coming off his best year and have all the knowledge you can get from somebody like that is great.”

Williams spent three years in college, one at Oklahoma and two at USC.

The quarterback won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and finished his college career with 10,082 passing yards and 93 touchdown passes while adding 27 rushing TDs.

In 12 games with the Trojans in 2023, Williams threw for 3,633 yards with 30 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Despite his best efforts, the team struggled, ending the season with a disappointing 7-5 record and failing to secure a College Football Playoff berth.

Williams is evidently one of the best players in this year’s draft but still has a way to go to reach Mahomes’ level.
