Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes are calm after L’Jarius Sneed’s departure: They already have a good replacement

Sneed signed a long-term deal with the Titans

Following the Kansas City Chiefs‘ decision to apply the franchise tag to star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, a trade was eventually struck with the Tennessee Titans.

In return, the Chiefs received a 2025 third-round pick and engaged in a swap involving a 2024 seventh-round pick.

Despite a challenging season, the Titans have stood out in free agency within the NFL.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs find themselves in a familiar position of rebuilding. Their consistent success attracts attention from other teams, leading to the departure of key players like Sneed, particularly when contract negotiations become contentious. This pattern echoes previous losses like Tyreek Hill‘s move to the Miami Dolphins. With Chris Jones securing a significant extension, sacrifices such as letting go of Sneed become necessary for the Chiefs.

How will the Chiefs adapt to Sneed departure?

However, Chiefs Kingdom can take solace in the astute drafting of general manager Brett Veach, who has consistently unearthed talent.

Emerging stars like George Karlaftis and Trent McDuffie offer promise, while veterans like Justin Reid provide stability in the defense. McDuffie and Reid will now shoulder greater responsibilities within Steve Spagnuolo‘s defensive scheme.

The persistence of the Titans ultimately led to their acquisition of Sneed. With this trade, the Chiefs’ defensive backfield undergoes significant changes, as reflected in the updated depth chart.

Looking ahead, the Chiefs must address these gaps, likely through further moves in free agency and targeted selections in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Veach’s track record suggests he’ll identify talent wherever it may lie, ensuring the team remains competitive. While uncertainties loom, the Chiefs can rely on Patrick Mahomes‘ prowess as a difference-maker, while acknowledging the ongoing need for strategic team-building.
