At the MVP award luncheon, Shohei Ohtani praises the Angels and Dodgers for ‘believing in me’

Shohei Ohtani officially put an end to his time with the Angels when he accepted his 2023 American League MVP award on Saturday night, more than a month after he signed a contract with the Dodgers and just three weeks before reporting to spring training.

At the 99th New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner, Ohtani sat on the same dais as other Major League Baseball award winners, such as NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. and NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. He slept that night with Ippei Mizuhara, his regular interpreter. He donned a bow tie, black dress shirt, and dark blue velvet suit.

Will Ferrell was suppоsed tо present оhtani, but he bоwed оut оf the event just a few days befоre because оf a schedule cоnflict. Rather, оhtani was given an entertaining welcоme by Dusty Baker, the star оutfielder frоm the Dоdgers whо recently retired as the Hоustоn Astrоs manager.

Then, for two minutes, Ohtani read a speech that was only in English.”I express my gratitude to the ownership, front office, and staff of the Angels organization for the past six years,” Ohtani uttered. “I’ve always valued your help and giving me the chance to play this game that I love so much. Thank you to all of my teammates and the coaching staff for your support and encouragement this year. Every day, I felt your encouragement.

“Thank you to the Dodgers organization for having faith in me. I’m excited for this next stage of my professional journey.

With his dog by his side, Ohtani, 29, made MLB history by becoming the first player to win successive MVP awards unanimously when he was awarded AL MVP in November.
