Brink is looking to become the future star of the LA SparksLAPRESSE
WNBA rookie Cameron Brink, now standing tall at 6-foot-4, once faced a prediction that she would never surpass 5-foot-10, a forecast that brought her to tears. Today, at 22, Brink has not only exceeded those early expectations physically but also grown emotionally.
Brink recently joined Paul George on his podcast, “Podcast P,” after her first game with the Los Angeles Sparks. The conversation spanned various topics, including a humorous impression of Kawhi Leonard’s laugh and, naturally, the subject of her height.
Recalling a childhood doctor’s visit, Brink shared a pivotal moment that occurred when she was just eight years old. During an annual checkup, the doctor predicted her brother Cy would reach 6-foot-10. Turning to Brink, the doctor estimated she would grow to about a foot shorter, around 5-foot-10.
“I was like, ‘No way!'” Brink exclaimed. “My dad’s 6’8, my mom’s 6’3… there’s no way I’m gonna be 5’10. So I started crying. I got upset. I looked at my mom and was like, ‘there’s no way that’s right.'”
Fast forward to her freshman year of college, Brink was already 6-foot-4, proving the doctor’s prediction wrong.
Despite her desire to match her family’s height, Brink struggled with her stature during her younger years. “You know, as a girl it’s weird […] Then you hate being tall as a girl ’cause all the guys make fun of you and stuff,” she explained.
However, Brink‘s perspective shifted over time. “Now I love being tall! Not so much, like middle school or high school – especially as a girl, that time sucks for everybody. Those times I was kind of slouching and definitely wasn’t proud of it. But now, I love it.”
Embracing the perks of height
Standing at 6-foot-4 comes with its advantages. Brink enjoys concerts more because she can see over the crowd and stands out in public, making her easily recognizable. Although some might consider her height suitable for modeling, Brink has encountered skepticism, with some saying she is “too tall to model.”
Nevertheless, Brink has defied these notions, modeling for SKIMS as part of its new partnership with the WNBA. Her height hasn’t deterred her from wearing heels or making a statement on draft night, where she turned heads.
Brink’s journey from doubting her height to embracing it highlights her resilience and self-acceptance, serving as an inspiration for many who face similar struggles.
